The postponement of Jay Ratliff’s DWI trial until after the season works out well for the defensive tackle and the Dallas Cowboys.

Ratliff’s DWI hearing had been scheduled for this morning in Tarrant County Criminal Court, but his lawyer, Tom Pappas, had the trial date re-set Wednesday for Feb. 20, 2014.

Postponing the trial until after the season effectively eliminates the possibility that Ratliff will be disciplined at all this season – either fined or suspended – under the NFL’s personal conduct policy. That’s because the NFL’s policy on DUI arrests imposes discipline for violations of law as determined by a court of law.

In this case, the court of law won’t determine Ratliff’s fate until February, so the NFL wouldn’t discipline Ratliff until following his trial. Of course, Ratliff’s trial date could change again, and the case could never go to trial.

I love how athletes and celebrities can just change their court dates or whatever to a time that is most convenient for them.
