A week into the season there were reports the Cowboys had approached quarterback Tony Romo about a new contract though nothing immediately came of it. Despite Dallas' uneven start -- they're 3-4 so far -- Romo, who has 15 turnovers (including a league-high 13 interceptions), remains in the organization's long-term plans.

Coach Jason Garrett says that Romo for the most part is making good decisions and many of his interceptions are a function of poor routes and breakdowns in communication. And team vice president Stephen Jones is still working to keep Romo in Dallas for the rest of the quarterback's career.

"We still feel that way," Jones said of Romo as the Cowboys' franchise quarterback of the future (via the Fort Worth Star-Telegram). "We've got a lot of confidence in Tony. Tony has a lot of confidence in himself. He is going to be fine. He is not the problem."

Jones sees a bright future for Romo, 32, who is in his 10th NFL season.

"I think he is going to get better," Jones said. "There are a lot of quarterbacks it doesn't happen right way for them as far as winning championships. You don't have to look any further than some of the Hall of Famers like Elway and Favre. It came late in their careers. They had some of the same issues that Tony has had. They had some really great games and some tough ones in terms of turning it over. It's all part of the process. There's a lot of expectations. He welcomes that. He will thrive."

I hope they sign him to a 10 year contract. That's just 1 less team we all have to worry about in the playoffs.

Romo hasn't been a "bad" QB at any time in his career up until this season.

I'll be the first to tell you they need to draft his replacement, and that he isn't what you would consider a winner.......but a bad QB?

At this moment, yes. But his career before that, not even close

The guy puts up pretty stats, but how long did it take him to stop worrying about being a celebrity? Let me check myself, he was a good stat QB, but I never really saw him as a leader.

Not a great QB, but a good one. He is a guy that gives a chance to win any game, but he isnt pulling out the win on his own. On a loaded team, one with legit SB talent, you would have a chance. But he won't make average better, which is what.is nessesary to be a true great and why guys like Brady and Manning and Brees are HOFers.

IMO he is in the Randal Cunningham, Matt Hasselbeck class if QBs. Both if whom are just a lil better IMO

Tony Romo is far from "bad." Especially when you look at some of that garbage that some teams try to pass off as NFL QBs nowadays. As poorly as Romo has played at times this season, what QB out there are you going to replace him with other than the obvious choices (Brady, Mannings, Roethlisberger, Ryan, Stafford, Rodgers...). He's not terrible...and when he is for a week or few weeks, it gets blown up even more because he is the QB of the Dallas Cowboys...

Four days ago, Rick Gosselin of The Dallas Morning News, did a column on this very topic. Basically, he said that the Cowboys have a fear of the unknown. That's why they re-signed Doug Free, Orlando Scandrick, Gerald Sensabaugh, and Barry Church to new contracts. And, since they have not groomed a replacement QB, when the time comes, he thinks they'll give Romo a huge deal for the rest of his career.

I'm not that big a Romo fan, but I really think he gets a bad wrap a lot of the times...more so than most QBs...maybe it's just me...

Maybe bad was the wrong word to use, but I agree with you. He has been a bad leader of the team and being that "franchise" saver.

I think the problem is that Romo isn't Aikman. Just like Danny White wasn't Roger Staubach. Danny White took the Cowboys to three straight NFC Championship Games from 1980-1982. The only problem was that he didn't win them. As far as most Cowboys fans are concerned, if you don't win, you're a bum.

    To quote an nfl coach

You play to win the game ...and as much as i defend romo ill equally dislike some of his play and lackadaisical approach to the game. I don't think he is a leader that aikmen, roger or Irvin was.

Last Sunday he pretty much lost is the game bunt growing too ints. But there isn't a viable replacement out their either.

So basically, the Cowboys are damned if they do and damned if they don't.
