Cowboys wide receiver Anthony Armstrong has been told by club officials that he will be released, according to a source.

Armstrong was competing for one of the Cowboys’ final roster spots as the team cuts its roster down to 53 players before 5 p.m. Saturday. By releasing Armstrong, the Cowboys will likely go with five receivers on their final roster with SMU-ex Cole Beasley getting the last spot. Armstrong had four catches for 47 yards this preseason.

Armstrong, who started 11 games for the Washington Redskins in 2010, played high school football at Carrollton Newman Smith and is a former player for the Dallas Desperados of the Arena Football League.
