"Could the Cubs wave goodbye to one power pitcher and say hello to another? One day after severing ties with closer Kerry Wood, the Cubs began exploring Friday the possibility of signing left-hander Randy Johnson to a one-year deal. General manager Jim Hendry still hopes to re-sign Ryan Dempster, but he's moving ahead with contingency plans in case Dempster leaves.

Wood has to go, he is done here in Chicago, but to get Randy Johnson? Maybe they should have traded for him in 1998 like they should have and win the division and maybe go further than a first round sweep?

I'm not sure how hard he throws the ball anymore but this would be a bad pickup for the Cubs. Mariners should look into him, they could sure use another pitcher and I bet he would like to end his career where it started.

This would be a good pickup if it's a one year deal. Everyone on the pitching market is going to be looking for an insane amount of money and years. If you can get Johnson for one year, you're getting a solid fifth starter without making a risky longterm commitment. Sabathia for six years is a worse deal than Johnson for one.

Not excited about this possibility at all but for a one year deal, I guess I would stomach it. Especially if this would mean no more Jason Marquis.

I'm surprised the Phils didn't look harder into Johnson, we like the oldies.

how is Wood done here in Chicago?

They've been paying him all this money for all the years he's been hurt, so he finally gets healthy enough to contribute and that's when they decide to let him go? It's stupid. Even if Hendry could strike some type of deal where Woody takes less money to play here simply based on loyalty it would be a smart move... they could use him in the bullpen.
