David Ortiz says he thinks his Boston Red Sox will benefit from Robinson Cano joining the Seattle Mariners, calling it "great news for us" but a blow to the rival New York Yankees. Ortiz, speaking in an interview with WEEI Radio in Boston, said the Yankees lost "the face" of the team when they failed to re-sign the free agent second baseman, who has reportedly agreed to a 10-year, $240 million contract with Seattle. "This guy hurt us," Ortiz said. "He is the guy that, you're never going to forget about him because he puts up some monster numbers. He puts up some monster numbers. I hate 10 year contracts with a passion. I also hate it when a team overpays for a player. There is no way Cano will be producing in 6-7 years, so all of that backend money will be wasted. But I'm stoked for this signing. This shows that the team is willing to open up the wallet for what they consider a key player. The young guys are developing well and our pitching staff is looking better and better. Could be an interesting year in 2015, but 2014 will likely not go all that well. Still too much work. The bullpen is dogcrap and we need another OF or two.
