NEW YORK -- Detroit's Justin Verlander has become the first starting pitcher in a quarter-century to win a Most Valuable Player award, adding it to his Cy Young Award last week. Verlander earned the American League MVP honor Monday, receiving 13 of 28 first-place votes and 280 points in voting announced by the Baseball Writers' Association of America. Boston center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury was second with 242 points, followed by Toronto right fielder Jose Bautista with 231 points. "It was such a relief to get that phone call," Verlander said in an ESPN "SportsCenter" interview minutes after the announcement. "Obviously, I want to say it's a dream come true, but winning the Cy Young was a dream come true." Source:ESPN
I think you could offer the entire farm system and the current team and the Tigers wouldn't even think about making that deal with the Mets...
i'm surprised the voters actually voted a pitcher for mvp ........... that's typically taboo ............... maybe the voters are waking up finally .................
I actually don't like it. He is deserving, but I don't like giving the MVP to a guy who plays 1 game every 5 days when there are field players playing every day all year and producing. I can't argue with his numbers. The guy is a beast. I just think a position player should get the MVP.
But Steve thats just it, isn't it even more impressive that he is the most valuable player on his team and this year and he doesn't play every day?
I don't think so. He's the best pitcher. They have an award for that and he is by far the most deserving of it. But I think the MVP should be for position players. I'm probably in the minority on that but it's cool.
I think usually the MVP is a position player, but there is no doubt taht with out J Verlander the Tigers don't even make the playoffs this year, he was the MVP this year
