The Philadelphia Eagles haven't initiated any talks to trade quarterback Michael Vick, and they might not this spring, but that doesn't preclude them from doing so at some point. Sources from two teams who would be in the market for a quarterback said they don't expect Vick to be dealt until the preseason. That's when his value could be enhanced by strong preseason performances, a full offseason of work with his team and injuries/uncertainty at quarterback on other teams. "I don't think there is enough value in a trade to make the move now," said an executive with a team that needs help at quarterback. "They don't have to trade him before the roster bonus is due, and I'd be very surprised if they traded him in March. I expect them to hold on to him until he has more peak value, and that could be in August or September." Source: NFL.com
They must be on crack if they think this guy is ever going to have serious trade value -- especially come August. Teams rather have their starting QB in place well before that so they know the system -- unless they can have someone like Brett Favre showing up to play, of course. And no one is going to take on his crazy, over-priced contract to be a backup. If the Eagles plan on waiting to trade him for 'peak value', they will be looking pretty stupid come September when they have to keep him or cut him.
Why? It's a no lose situation for the Eagles to wait until just before his roster bonus kicks in unless they get a decent offer beforehand.
The Eagles should showcase his talents as much as possible in the pre-season games and see if they can increase his value. On the other hand, if he struggles then his trade value tanks.
He will most likely be gone but you gotta say you are gonna keep him so people will at least bid for him rather than releasing him and getting nothing
Agreed. Vick still needs a whole offseason to learn a new teams playbook and scheme. He also needs reps and time to gel with his receivers and the rest of the offense. Bringing Vick in in August or September is not going to help, unless that team is planning to bring him back up to speed slowly and be the #2 until hes ready to take the reins after being away from the game almost three years and had limited time at QB for the Eagles in '09. Its almost like him being a "born again quarterback." It'll feel like he's a rookie all over again.
