Ex-Raiders Bust JaMarcus Russell Attempting NFL Comeback

Discussion in 'Oakland Raiders' started by BigBlueBruiser, Oct 27, 2011.

  1. JaMarcus Russell has been called many things, but "motivated self-starter" has never been one of them. CBS Sports reported after a recent interview with the former Oakland QB that "(JaMarcus Russell) doesn't exactly have a track record for being either fiscally responsible, good at football, or in shape." Russell also detailed in the interview some of the problems he faced while playing for the Raiders. "In the NFL, my first year, I had to be there at 6:30 before practice and be on the treadmill for an hour," he said. "Then meetings come, I sit down, eat my fruit. We watch film, and maybe I got tired. Coach Flip (quarterback coach John DeFilippo) pulled me aside and said, 'What are you doing for night life?' I said, 'Coach, I'm just chilling.' He said, 'I need to get you checked out.' I did the sleep test, and they said I had apnea." Despite the wave of antipathy Russell faces, he is indeed attempting to make a comeback in the NFL. Russell, of course, will have to prove that he can get in NFL shape and that incidents with the law are a thing of the past, but thanks to his salary as a former No. 1 draft pick, Russell reportedly does not have to worry about being broke on the comeback trail. Russell says, in fact, that he is "far from (being broke)."

I'm sure there's some team in the NFL that needs help selling merchandise in their team stores.

    Not gonna happen.

He spent too much time blaming everyone and everything else for his problems. If he sounded like a guy who saw the light and recognized all the things that he did that caused his NFL downfall, then maybe I'd see a glimmer of hope. But this isn't going to end well. Actually, it's not even gonna get off the ground far enough to end badly.

Still play? Tell me when he ever could play. He got drafted #1 based off of 1 good bowl game at the end of his year. Dude was overrated from the start.

uh yeah, i know.... he was a second round prospect with insane size and strength. i thought it should have been against the law for him to go over calvin, or even quinn.....but when he played he wasnt really that terrible. he had crap around him and several crapty coaches.

and was downin codiene by the liter, but still...not sure the raiders were the best franchise for russell to land in

He was never drafted based upon performance, it was all about his size and arm strength. I remember all the draft experts being so drunk on his size that they ignored the fact that the guy was fat, lazy, slow, inaccurate and borderline goobered.

    you must have 20/20 hindsight

he was a great prospect, no way a first overall one to me....he wasnt fat, he wasnt lazy, and wasnt slow, and he wasnt inaccurate...his career at LSU actually wasnt bad at all and he had the stongest arm the NFL had ever seen..he wasnt all those things until his second year as a raider.

what really did him in was he was a borderline top 25 prospect but probably more of a second rounder with insane measurables....if he got drafted in the late first and got a modest deal i dont think he would have been a bust, but he held out all of his rookie camp trying to make as much coin as he could (he was in the driver seat there) and he made that $60 million deal he didnt deserve...then he got lazy and started having problems
