LONDON -- Bolton midfielder Fabrice Muamba remains in critical condition after going into cardiac arrest and collapsing during an FA Cup match at Tottenham. Bolton said in a statement Sunday that the 23-year-old player's heart only "started working again" at a London hospital Saturday night. The former England under-21 player fell face-down to the pitch near midfield during Saturday's match and medics rushed out to begin resuscitating him. Releasing more details of Muamba's condition, Bolton says that he remains "in a critical condition" in intensive care at the London Chest Hospital's heart attack unit. Bolton manager Owen Coyle returned to the east London hospital Sunday morning after rushing there with Muamba, who has played 33 times for England's under-21 squad. Source:ESPN
Was watching this. It was scary. It reminded me of the Hank Gathers incident back in 1990. They had to use a defibrillator and such. Did CPR for like 10 minutes on the pitch. Prayers are with him and his family.
In 1990 Hank Gathers(who was 20 at the time) collapsed and died on the basketball court because he had an undiagnosed heart condition. I bet it's the same thing in this situation. I've had one my entire life and was diagnosed at 13. It can easily be written off as a heart murmur, especially if you're a star athlete. If you put un-needed stress on your heart and have one of these defects it just gives out. Most of these are nick named "SDS"(sudden death syndrome) because you just drop dead without warning. You can be healthy as can be but have this. I think the defibrillator is what saved his life and I think he'll recover. Well, hope. But that may have saved him right there and it's great thinking by the medics. Fingers crossed/prayers sent.
