The Cleveland Browns have lost another player from their 1964 NFL championship team, as Johnny Brewer passed away recently. Brewer, a starting tight end on that 10-3-1 squad, was 74 and died from complications developed from a terminal illness at St. Catherine’s Village in Madison, Miss. Brewer was a fourth-round draft pick for the Browns, the 41st overall pick, in 1960. In 1964, his best season, Brewer caught 25 passes for 338 yards and three touchdowns to help the Browns reach the NFL title game where they hammered the Baltimore Colts, 27-0. He retired having made 89 catches for 1,256 yards and six touchdowns and averaged 14.1 yard per catch over his career, two yards higher than former Browns player and Pro Football Hall of Fame tight end Ozzie Newsome.
