Free Agent CB Nnamdi Asomugha Could Command $19M Per Year?

Discussion in 'NFL General Discussion' started by BigBlueBruiser, Jul 6, 2011.

  1. In an NFL.com chat Wednesday, Jason La Canfora of NFL Network suggested that cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha could command a contract in free agency that approaches $19 million a year. It'd make him the highest paid player in NFL history. It's worth noting that Asomugha's last contract was for $45.3 million across three seasons, with $28.5 million guaranteed. La Canfora believes the Buccaneers could be serious bidders for Asomugha, pointing to their "pretty massive" proposal to Albert Haynesworth in February of 2009, and need to reach the salary cap "floor" in the new CBA.

  2. The new salary cap floor which requires teams to spend 95 percent of their total cap will force teams to open up their checkbooks.....but $19M for a cornerback is a very steep price.

Would teams like Philadelphia commit about $30M at the CB position with Samuel making over $10M this season?

If Tampa could land him......that could make the Buccaneers one of the early favorites in the conference to reach the Super Bowl.

I'd personally never pay this much for corner, maybe not even half of it. I just dont think they can have the impact on the game worth that amount of money. Nmamdi is a stud but that insane, especially for a 30 year old corner.

  4. I think it would be a similar contract he received in Oakland......maybe a 3-4 year deal that could be worth around $80M with about $28-30M in guaranteed money.

Nmamdi would be worth it in the short term......especially if he helps you win a Super Bowl.

I could see that, i personally dont think any corner is worth that kind of money but to each as own, ur right tho, if he helps get you a trophy then im sure they'll be some teams that'll gladly write the check.

Samuel is on the books for $5.9M for 2011.

$19M for a CB is ridiculous money. I would be shocked if a team paid him that kind of money...that is just silly coin.

  9. I'm sure that his base salary.....

But even with that alone.....it would come to over $25M between them. Still a steep price for two CB's on the same team.

I think the Eagles are more likey to take a flier on Eric Wright

Young, and will be relatively cheap coming off a down year. has the skill to be a #1 CB, but could thrive as the #2.

With NY employing Smith, Nicks and Manningham, and Dallas with Austin and Bryant. Philadlphia has to definatly upgrade that spot

  11. Wright or they could inquire about Ike Taylor.

Taylor is more than capable but doesn't have the reputation like Nnamdi.....and he would be cheaper.

That's his base. He has $4.5M in incentives over the 6 year deal and he has no more roster bonuses available. I've heard several times that his 2011 salary is pretty much what it is.

I've been saying that for a while now that the money they would tie up with Samuel and Asomugha would be a lot to put into to CBs. That's why I keep thinking/saying that Ike Taylor is a better option for the Eagles...

  13. They could use the money to sign Taylor and upgrade at OLB or on the defensive line.

    Or O-Line.

19M a year, are you freaking kidding me. That is insane, there is no way a corner can command that much money, Tom Brady, one of the greatest QB's of all time hands down, commands 18M or something a year. Nnamdi is a stud don't get me wrong, but that is ridiculous.

i think hes truly a dominant player....but paying that for a corner is nuts, they could get a guy who could do a good enough job for much much less and spend that money somewhere else

again, the eagles still need to re-sign djax and vick plus the rookie draft picks and some others. aso aint happening, especially if he's hitting the glass pipe with these numbers.
