George Michael, a veteran Washington sportscaster who gained national recognition with his syndicated "The George Michael Sports Machine" highlights show, died Thursday. He was 70. Michael's daughter, Michelle Allen, said Michael died from complications of chronic lymphocytic leukemia at Sibley Memorial Hospital. ESPN
George Michael Dies Some of you might have known him for all sports, here in D.C we knew him because of the Redskins Report. It's sad to see him go, I grew up watching him as a little kid, loved the team to death, he also did stuff on the Wizards, Nationals and Capitals, but he was all about the Redskins. Was a great sportscaster definitely sad to see him go. This year just keeps getting worse for Redskins fans. He died in the same hospital I was born in, in Washington D.C. I was stunned to hear this news today. I could not believe it. He did even more than just Redskins. In the 70's he was a very accomplished DJ in New York. He took a job at WRC (DC's NBC station). He became known as King George for him being the King of sports news for nearly 30 years in this area. Nationally, his Sports Machine was popular quite a few years ago as one of the 1st shows to go across the gambit of sports using sports highlights. I like HTTR, watched Redskin Report and Full Court Press (his Redskin and Wizard shows) that he led for years. My prayers go out to his family, especially his wife. I've heard he and her had such a close relationship, beyodn those of most couples.
Definitely were. They had some footage at his home from this past week when he was allowed to go back there (I assume to die there now unfortunately). He was out there on the tractor cleaning up the snow and his wife was there yelling at him.
Yea, 'back in the day' (Damn, I hate that freaking phrase), the SM was the show to see more highlights than you'd see on regular programming. Watched it from the start... I'd say I missed George now that he died but the truth of the matter is I've missed him a lot longer than that. Thanks for the memories, George. RIP & hope you left knowing your fans were all out there....always.
