Giants Informed Teams That DE Osi Umenyiora Was "Off Limits"

Discussion in 'New York Giants' started by BigBlueBruiser, May 4, 2010.

  1. The Giants have publicly said that defensive end Osi Umenyiora wasn't going anywhere, even if he would like to, and the Giants also have told teams privately the same thing. According to NFL Network's Jason La Canfora, multiple teams called the Giants during the NFL Draft to make offers. The teams were "rebuffed" and were told that Umenyiora was "off limits" no matter what they've seen in the media.

Maybe they feel this way now but I have a hard time thinking he was strictly off limits. They've now had a look at Pierre-Paul in practice and probably value Osi higher with the understanding that he needs time to develop. If was to go in there, amaze people, and challenge to start I'm not sure the Giants would be saying the same thing.

Wait, what? Did you even read it? They didn't say this now... this isn't fresh talk... Everything here was said draft weekend and before.

Also, judging JPP off a 3 day rookie minicamp (something you dove head first into) is ridiculous, and besides, the Giants already look at him as player to develop. He's at least 4 deep on the DE depth chart. There is no rush in 2010.

JPP is not a guy that is gonna come in and produce off the bat.

There was some chatter that we we're gonna take him if he fell. He's a guy you take in the hopes that 2 or 3 years of developing, he'll be a stud

To be honest, JPP is an odd pick for the Giants if they didn't plan to offload Osi in the near future. I fail to believe that he would of been off-limits if they were given a good deal.

That's because your thinking this year, rather than thinking a few years ahead as a good GM has to do to build a team for the future (and avoid problems occuring). Kiwanuka has his contract coming due next season and possibly won't be coming back, so by having JPP on board and having a year under his belt, he can come in and compete for playing time, if they decide to trade Kiwi (or he finishes out his contract and leaves).
