David Carr, Eli Manning's back-up for four of the past five seasons, planned to see what other opportunities are out there as a free agent, Jenny Vrentas of the Newark Star-Ledger reports.

The NFL's new 87-hour negotiating period, in which teams are permitted to contact agents of impending free agents but not enter into any sort of agreement, gives a preview of what opportunities are out there. And so far, in the hours since the negotiating period began at midnight earlier today, two teams in addition to the Giants have expressed interest in Carr, according to a person with knowledge of the attention Carr has received.

That person requested anonymity because teams do not typically announce which free agents have drawn their interest.

Carr, 33, is interested in exploring other opportunities that may give him the potential to compete for a starting role, he's worked with several coaches around the NFL during his 11-year career, and in a thin free-agent quarterback class, the former No. 1 overall pick could find work on a team without a clear-cut answer at quarterback.

eh, i don't know if any of us think this guy can actually win a starting job anywhere in the league, as the article suggests. i'm sure a couple of teams may want to bring him in just for a veteran back-up job.
