The Giants decision to add veteran S Deon Grant added more fuel to the speculation that the team is more concerned about the anticipated recovery of S Kenny Phillips (knee) from microfracture surgery. Phillips, the talented third-year safety who underwent the procedure last September in an effort to alleviate an arthritic condition in his left knee, is not expected to do much until training camp at the soonest, and even then, he's likely to be placed on a managed schedule. While the team officials continue to insist that they're optimistic of having Phillips back on the field in September, the addition of Grant, a durable safety who hasn't missed a game since his rookie season, gives the Giants a better fallback option should Phillips suffer any setbacks.

And that is what any sensible team would do in the situation.....as it is understandably an unsure situation (especially with a degenerative condition).

Also the Giants tend to rotate their safeties anyway so they would prefer to have 3 safeties who are capable.

I think the Giants are being real smart about it, especially after last years disaster at safety.
