What's the most important role on an NFL team for success .... General Manager, Head Coach, or QuarterBack? If you could have your favorite GM, favorite HC, or favorite QB of all time (but only one) on your team right now, which one would you choose?
Great idea for a thread. Imma put some thought into this and get back to you. HC would be my off the top of my head answer. Question. Any GM, HC, QB or one connected with my team i.e. Buccaneers.
whichever way you would like to view it. i was thinking about it more in a general sense if I were starting a franchise from scratch and i could take any other teams' gm, hc, or qb, which one would i choose first to give my team the best chance at success.
I say HC. I truly believe you could put Bill Belichick on almost any team right now.. And within a two year span he would create a winner. Within 3-4 years a Super Bowl contender.
With Bill being such a great football mind, I highly doubt any (even Jerry) GM would question his suggestions.
QB, see Peyton Manning. He made the whole FO look amazing and cover up that Pioli is not that good of a GM.
Tough call between hc and qb for me. When you think about it, the dynasties in the NFL have come with the same qb-coach combo haven't they? Or am I wrong on that? My gut feeling says I'd rather have a franchise qb. Sent from my Samsung Galaxy S2 Skyrocket
Can't really argue that.. But just think what the Pats did without Brady. Brady is about as franchise as it gets. lol side not: Can't believe I am arguing about the farking Pats.. fml
That is like asking what is more important to the body. Brain, heart or blood. Can't live without any of them. The GM is important in the acquiring of talent. With bad talent any coach would suffer. The HC is important for choosing the right assistants to help with the team. And you need a real good qb to win consistently nowadays. We have seen the affects of having a horrible GM for years in Bill K. in the 90's. But if I had to pick one it would be a GM. He would get the good coach and sign the good quarterback. I vote for Brees in the HOF.
QB. No matter how good a GM you have or how good a head coach you have, if you don't have the field general who can execute and execute well, more times than not, you're not going to win championships...
As someone said before, I think Peyton Manning wins this argument all by himself. Sent from my Samsung Galaxy S2 Skyrocket
GM... A mediocre HC given players by an astute GM becomes a better HC just from the better talent. Better players in a crapty system will elevate that system by sheer quality of play. Besides all that, getting rid of a poor HC would leave a much better talent pool for the next HC. As far as QB, we've all seen teams who were 'light' in that position win it all due to the talent across the board.
Tarkus that last part is true. But of you want more than 1 championship history says you need a qb. Sent from my Samsung Galaxy S2 Skyrocket
Depends on what you consider success, I guess. There's been some regular season wins piled up i.e. Peyton Manning whose team's weren't good enough to bring home the Trophy more than once while the glory position of QB gets more of the credit at times for SB wins than they should. Take away GM John McVay/HC Bill Walsh collaboration & you may not see Montana drafted (along with Rice/Lott). Dallas had a great QB in Staubach but take your hat off to Tex Schramm for building those great teams. Pittsburgh Steelers didn't use a GM so Chuck Noll, basically GM/HC, gets the credit for a slew of amazing drafts. Take away Swann/Stallworth from the great Bradshaw & I don't know how great his accomplishments would be. Take Belichick-GM/HC away from the Pats & I don't see Tom Brady taking them to the Promise Land over & over. An astute GM works well with the HC/ relies on the HC's experience in roster moves/or in some cases, good enough to handle both GM/HC responsibilities & keeps the team budget healthy for years to come. In turn, I'd expect at least a good QB out of someone that that savvy at the helm & 'good' would be enough on a well built team.
