The words were delivered softly, without The Boss' bluster, but the content was unmistakably Steinbrennerian."We let our fans down in the playoffs, there's no doubt about it," said Hal Steinbrenner, younger son of the late George M. Steinbrenner and the principal owner of the New York Yankees, as he arrived at the Pfister Hotel for the owner's session of baseball's GM meetings."And they know that, and I know that and (GM Brian) Cashman knows that. But our team from last year for the most part is intact. There's some concerns and we're going to address them."The Yankees lost to Detroit in the American League Division Series. But instead of getting fired, or even reprimanded, Cashman recently wsa signed to a new three-year contract. CC Sabathia, who was unable to win either of his two starts in the ALDS, just had his contract extended. And the new boss raised the alien possibility that the Yankees may go through this offseason without making another major free-agent signing."We're looking at everything and looking at everybody, as we do every offseason," Steinbrenner said. "We've got a couple of areas that we've addressed where we need to improve and we're going to look to do that. But I'm not going to get into who or how much or anything else."Steinbrenner addressed the Yankees' areas of need as starting pitching and perhaps adding a left-hander to the bullpen. But he did not rule out the possibility that, as they did in 2011, the Yankees would seek to fill their pitching vacancies with lower-profile -- and lower price tag -- pitchers along the lines of Freddy Garcia and Bartolo Colon, rather than with high-end free agents such as C.J. Wilson or Japanese phenom Yu Darvish."It wouldn't surprise me if we did, it wouldn't surprise me if we didn't," Steinbrenner said in response to a question about possible free-agent signings. "It's just too early for that. I hate to be vague, but it is mid-November." Source: ESPN
He sure did. The day he was born. ZING! Screw the Steinbrenners. It's sad that George passed when he did but that heck was a douchebag and the apple didn't even bother falling off of the tree. He's the same douche his dad was. Screw the Yankees. They're going to chuck a ton of money at CJ Wilson and Yu Darvish and we all know it. Screw those pieces of crap that have ruined baseball. I still believe that baseball needs a hard cap and the Yankees can go heck themselves. Did I make it sound like I dislike the Yankees? Good. Screw them.
Tell the orphanage and the countless Boys and Girls Clubs named after their biggest supporter in Tampa what a douche bag George was. Or maybe the a pediatric emergency center at St. Joseph's Hospital he paid for (in full) to open. The Lights at too many little league fields to count and the high school with his namesake. He might have been a ruthless SOB between the lines on the diamond but he had a huge heart and gave to the Tampa community with open arms. Don't mean that directed at you Duke. But I stand up for George whenever I see people dogging him. As for Hal...Screw'em. And as for the article...no crap Hal.
He also REPEATEDLY paid for waiters and waitresses who served him to go to college as his tip...now thats bad butt. I love the George.
Yeah saw it in a documentary, never wanted anyone to know, some of the girls came out after he died and told a story about it. It was basically they were serving him, he asked a couple questions struck up a conversation, eventually it would come to a topic about school, they would say they were waitressing to pay through college. He would eat, than leave a tip of like 100 or 200 thousand on the table with a note saying, quit this job and focus on school, and leave without a word. I may not have all the details correct, but if I ever had that kind of money I would want to be just like George. That is awesome.
