Is It Time to Start Over in Baltimore?

For some people, the time is now for Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome to blow up the roster and start over. The Baltimore Examiner's Gary Lambrecht says Newsome should start with head coach Brian Billick and quarterback Steve McNair.

(For the record, McNair would like Lambrecht to go, um, Lambrecht himself for suggesting as much.)
The Ravens might have done themselves and their fans a favor by falling so flat in yet another Billick-authored low point on national television. They offered definitive proof they are not a playoff team, so we don't have to waste time over the next two months watching the standings and doing any math.

Now, it's up to the brass to start orchestrating some moves to take this operation in another direction. With Boller and rookie Troy Smith under contract next year, the Ravens still need a quarterback of the present and the future. Maybe it's Smith. But maybe it's a young NFL passer such as Green Bay backup Aaron Rodgers or Buffalo's Trent Edwards. Maybe it's Boston College's 6-foot-5 senior Matt Ryan.
What happens with the quarterback situation depends on far this team falls over the next seven weeks. If they have a top-10 pick, then the talk of taking franchise quarterback will be all we'll hear this spring (remember, Baltimore was set to take Brady Quinn if the Browns hadn't rescued him).

I suppose the Ravens could hand the job to Boller -- again -- but that's kinda like banging your head against the wall and wondering why it hurts. At some point, you need to mix things up.

As for the head coach, Lambrecht makes the obvious suggestion: Rex Ryan. Which probably means he has no chance.

Ravens coach Brian Billick, who has repeatedly backed McNair in the past, was noncommittal about the QB's status after Week 10's loss to the Bengals, the Carroll County Times reports. When asked if McNair remains his quarterback, Billick tellingly said, "as of right now, yes...obviously, we'll make all our adjustments going forward."

For his part, McNair said, "I don't know what the coaches are going to decide. If they decide to go with Kyle (Boller), that's fine. I'll probably agree with them." As much respect as McNair has earned during his career, it seems pretty obvious that the Ravens need to make a move here. More on this situation as the week progresses.

Sounds like even McNair has given up on himself. If that's not a sign that it's time to rebuild and go in a different direction I don't know what is.

The Ravens situation appears to be eerily similar to the Fins.....Bad QB play, an OK O-line, a beat up aging defense, and young injury prone running backs......Time to blow up both of them and start over.
