The Jaguars are prepared to let cornerback Derek Cox enter unrestricted free agency next month.

General manager Dave Caldwell said today the Jaguars will not be using the franchise tag on any player.

The tag figure for a cornerback is $10.668 million, a salary that is guaranteed once the tender is signed.

Caldwell said he intends to talk to Cox’s agent, David Sullivan, this week at the Combine against a new contract.

In a phone interview, Cox said: “We’re trying to work out a deal with them and we still have two weeks to do that. That’s really my main focus. I’m trying to remove the emotions at this point because it is a business.â€￾

Cox, the Jaguars’ top cornerback last year when healthy, confirmed that he had recently switched to Sullivan from agents Pat Dye and Bill Johnson.
