Jets Owner Woody Johnson Rips NFL In Statement About Coin Toss

The NFL announced Monday that both the Jets and Giants would open at home in Week 1 of the 2010 season to herald the debut of the teams' jointly financed new Meadowlands Stadium. The Giants will open the building on Sunday afternoon, Sept. 12 while the Jets will host the season's Monday Night Football opener the following evening. "After extensive discussions with both teams, we have come up with what we believe is a unique approach for celebrating the opening of the new Meadowlands Stadium," league commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement. Apparently that compromise didn't mollify Jets owner Woody Johnson, who lashed out tonight at the league, which reportedly decided which team would play first by a coin toss. Said Johnson in a statement: "An NFL coin toss has a few fundamental elements that are missing here, most notably the presence of the teams involved. That's how it's always done in the league, whether it's determining the order of the draft or deciding who's going to kick off the game. When the issue of which team would be hosting the first regular-season game could not be resolved on the merits, I suggested a coin toss as the fairest way to resolve this issue. The league rejected that idea. Then, I was told on Friday that a coin toss had taken place at the league office and that the Jets had lost. We rejected a process in which neither team was present. The league departed from our time-honored tradition and declined the opportunity to set the matter straight with a transparent process."

He has a point. At the very least they could have had a 3 way phone conference during the coin toss so every one was on board. It just looks shady to me.

lol @ the Jets... if you had been able to get your own stadium approved like we did you wouldn't have had to jump back on the wagon and you wouldn't have a problem now would you.

It is, but the Giants were having it done on there own as their stadium, the Jets being a part was not in the original planning of the stadium. The Jets were trying to get there own stadium done at the same time and when it failed they came back to partner with the Giants. We would have had the stadium either way, but whatever it's half the Jets technically, until you look at thing like where the practice facilities are located. Giants practice facilities and offices are just foot steps away from the stadium while the Jets is in Florham Park.
