Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez is still having problems and pain in his throwing shoulder, according to ESPN New York.

That situation means rookie Geno Smith is the likely starter for the opener, and perhaps much longer.

Sanchez has a bruised shoulder joint and hasn't begun throwing again.

He could be sidelined a few weeks, meaning Matt Simms and Graham Harrell would back up Smith.

Smith struggled in his last preseason outing.
