New York Jets coach Rex Ryan said Monday he was prepared to recruit Brett Favre back to the team after the QB's brief retirement in the early part of 2009. Ryan, who had just become the Jets' head coach, said he would have tried to lure Favre back to the team if New York hadn't selected Mark Sanchez in the first round of the 2009 draft. Favre ultimately ended his retirement months later and he joined the Minnesota Vikings (who will travel to play the Jets next week) that August. "If we never drafted Mark Sanchez, there would have been some major recruiting done," Ryan said, via the Newark Star-Ledger. "I can say that absolutely. "And maybe nobody knows it or whatever, but I can promise you that's how I was feeling." The Jets cut ties with Favre and released him from his contract after they drafted Sanchez. Favre had played one season with the Jets and led them to a non-playoff 9-7 finish in 2008. Source: USAToday
