Why is it as hard to have a good one, that maintains a winning program, as it is to have a great QB? Belichick is considered #1, but his degree of success would have been much less without Brady. I believe all multi Super Bowl winning teams had that rare combo of great coach/great QB ingredient. However, with the limited success of todays QB's looking at the long term, it's hard to find that type of QB. The difficulty of the game today I think naturally weeds out a lot of coaches. You can't get away with running the same Offense/Defense that teams ran years ago. I believe a couple of games ago a writer said the Pats ran 27 different sets on Offense to open up receivers and their running game. That's crazy for a Defense to adjust to.
With the amount of money involved, I don't think owners are willing to gamble long on coaches, however, there doesn't seem to be much available to fill these positions. I like what Haley did at KC bringing in proven assistants like Weis and Romeo to help him, which has showed in KC's success. A good/above average coach can have success with that short term till his assistants get yanked away with head coaching jobs, but still needs a great QB to become a consistent SB contender.
Just curious what people feel on coaching in the NFL.

i think we often underestimate how hard it is to win in this league. I mean, hell, we're talking about guys like jeff fisher and tom coughlin possibly getting fired in the next couple of weeks......... are we saying they are NOT good coaches?

hell no. there are a ton of sharp football minds in this league though. That, along with the parity in talent from team to team, makes it very difficult to win consistently. That's what makes consistent winners like the Pats, Colts, Steelers, Eagles, etc. so amazing in today's game.

While this is true you gotta admit that it's nice to have a team that with the exception of a few years gives you something to root for. Tom Cable could be our head coach and our high point could be anticipating an early 1st round pick. While I would like the birds to hoist that trophy, I'm happy with having a highly competitive team. Again, not happy we haven't won but happy we're not an after thought in the league. Who knows, maybe this is the year.

However, it is hard to find a good coach who lasts a while and helps you to win. I'm always in awe of how guys keep their jobs (Del Rio, Fisher, Cable, Turner, Coughlin) when their teams aren't that great. On Dan Patrick a few weeks ago they were talking about which would you prefer, An Amazing Coach or and Amazing QB. I honestly think the coach is more important because you can have a great QB (Phil Rivers) and have a marginal coach and your team can still suck. Put a guy like Reid or Bellichick in San Diego and what happens?
