The Lions benched rookie Darius Slay down the stretch, in favor of veteran Rashean Mathis, during the team's 34-24 win over the Minnesota Vikings.

On Detroit's first defensive snap, Slay whiffed attempting to tackle Adrian Peterson and the mistake proved costly as the star running back found a lane and broke free for a 78-yard touchdown.

Slay failed to wrap up Peterson a second time in the second quarter, allowing him to wiggle free for a 4-yard score.

In the passing game, the Vikings picked on the rookie early and often. After giving up a 47-yard completion to receiver Jerome Simpson in the third quarter, Detroit sat Slay in favor of Mathis.

"Yeah, liked his experience, particularly in the fourth quarter of a game like that," Schwartz said. "(Slay) had given up that deep ball. I didn't want him letting that affect him, playing soft. We just thought it was the right time to go to the bullpen on that."
