The Lions have claimed safety DeJon Gomes off waivers, according to Aaron Wilson. Gomes was let go by the Washington Redskins during the final round of roster cuts, and now he is off to Detroit as the Lions' fifth safety, assuming that John Wendling is kept around.

Gomes, a fifth-round pick in 2011, was active for 15 games in each of his first two seasons in the NFL. He made five starts in his rookie year and three in 2012. Last season, he recorded 40 tackles, 4 passes defended and an interception for Washington.

It's not clear at this point who the Lions are going to release to make room for Gomes.
