WR Calvin Johnson has signed a seven-year contract extension with the Lions, according to multiple reports. Terms of the contract haven’t been disclosed, but the deal is expected to be similar to the eight-year, $120 million contract that Cardinals’ WR Larry Fitzgerald signed last season. Update: $132M, $60M guaranteed

Don't care how much, he deserves it. So happy he is signed and don't have to worry about losing him. NOW lets get our RFA and franchised player signed.

His athleticism has a lot to do with the money hes going to make, but his maturity, work ethic and just the fact that hes a good guy makes it all the better.

we would agree that megatron is the best receiver in the league .......... however, if the lions are literally using 15% of their entire cap space ($19 mill/yr) for a single receiver when they are already in cap hell, that's a stupid contract.

maybe they severely back-loaded this thing and with the pro-rating it will only hit their cap at $12 mill/yr for the first few years and then the last few years will blow up to cap hits of $26 mill/yr and they can either restructure or if he's blown out his knee, they can dump the contract.

In that case, then this contract is mainly just for 'show' and shock value and to remind everyone that megatron is a lion.

I don't think using 15% of their cap space on Megatron is too crazy. Megatron and Stafford can single handedly win games together. It might be a bit ridiculous but to keep the best Wideout in the league its acceptable.

its not crazy at all, calvin would not have gotten THIS deal (im sure he would have gotten paid like a superstar) but not that much if the lions drafted jason smith or aaron curry #1 that year. But the fact that they got a franchise QB locked up for the forseeable future, and some good pieces on defense tied up they can definitely afford to pay calvin a crazy amount of money to make sure he stays put.

well, we will just agree to disagree gentlemen. wide receivers can't win football games for teams. they are what is known as 'complementary' players.

that's why calvins' record in this league as a starter is 13-16 with stafford throwing him the ball and when anyone other than stafford throws him the ball, he is 6-33.

wide receivers don't win football games. they are just a tool used by the QB. And Megatron is obvioulsy the best in the business right now, but there's a limit as to what a 'position' should be worth to a team and a wide receiver making more money than tom brady, drew brees, and aaron rodgers is just straight up stupid.

EDIT: pft just posted a story that the numbers that were being reported for his contract are grossly inflated. When you break it down, it's actually more like $15.6 mill/yr. Not even the Lions were dumb enough to actually pay a wide receiver more than tom brady, drew brees, and aaron rodgers, which was basically my point. Should he be the highest paid WR in the game? Absolutely. Was $19 mill/yr dumb? Yes. Is almost $16 mill/yr still a bit much for the position? Probably, but if you were going to overpay any WR in the game, it should be Megatron.
