McGwire apologizes to La Russa, Selig

NEW YORK -- Mark McGwire finally came clean Monday, admitting he used steroids when he broke baseball's home run record in 1998.

McGwire said in a statement sent to The Associated Press on Monday that he used steroids on and off for nearly a decade.

"I wish I had never touched steroids," McGwire said in a statement. "It was foolish and it was a mistake. I truly apologize. Looking back, I wish I had never played during the steroid era."

During a 20-minute phone call with The AP on Monday, McGwire says he called commissioner Bud Selig and Cardinals manager Tony La Russa earlier in the day to personally apologize.

Good, I know he wasn't the only one using them but at least he was man enough to man up. I am worried about the legal repercussions for perjury though.

IDK MJ, I don't think he ever actually said he didn't use steroids back then. Didn't he skirt around the questions?

I don't remember. I think he said no comment, but that won't stop someone with too much time in congress to try and push the issue with him.

Mac isn't going to face any freaking charges for this. He never lied in the first place. He pleaded the 5th and chose not to talk about the past. Congress would have no grounds to charge him for perjury.

I'm glad this is off of his back though and can completely understand why he didn't want to own up to it when it first happened. Him nor Pameiro, or Sosa should have admitted it. It would have been completely giving credibility to the worst scumbag that ever picked up a baseball bat in his life. No one should have to lose the credibility of their legacy behind a bitter jerk like Canseco who just wanted some attention and some money off of these guys history.

Hopefully the media and the fans will finally put this hate fest on Mac to rest now. The guy was always great to baseball fans and the media his entire career.

Uh.....isn't Canseco right about this one? It's obvious he knew what he was talking about.

He's only speaking because he got that new job. If he didn't get the jobby job, he'd still have no comment.

WHAT????? dude, seriously, are you from this planet ? this may be the most outlandished post i have ever read in my entire life. nobody should lose their credibility or legacy because of a bitter jerk ? so you just totally discount the fact that they ALL CHEATED to gain their legacy ?

and what the heck does it matter how nice mcgwire was to the fans and media face to face. he was freaking them over behind their backs.

First of all, it was at least 5 years too damn late and it wasn't even a real confession. He won't even admit that steroids actually helped him, but yet he still felt the need to apologize to the Maris family. WHAT?!?! :icon_eek: I'm just lovin' that his own peers are comin' out against him lately!!! :icon_lol:

Personally, I hope he stays employed by the Cardinals so he can be one big season-long distraction to the team!!!

I thought "I'm not here to talk about the past" was the most ridiculous thing he could say, but "I only took it to stay healthy" is down right comical (and also still cheating).
