Mike Holmgren, who is finishing up a disappointing three-year run as the Browns' team president, has said he would consider a return to coaching, where he already has a case for potential Hall of Fame induction. Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reports some sources who know Holmgren well believe Dallas is the one potential opening that would truly interest him, given the competitiveness of the roster, the skill players present, and his long relationship with Cowboys owner Jerry Jones. Holmgren and Jones worked closely together for more than a decade on the NFL's Competition Committee. If the perfect scenario does not arise, sources close to Holmgren expect him to retire. ^^That^^ I don't know how the rumor ever started about him being a guru of sorts. If Cowboy fans think they've got it bad now... :icon_rolleyes:
He was a very good coach. Terrible GM, but a very good coach. The Packers had been the doormat of the NFL since the late 60's before he took over and made them a Super Bowl team (and who subsequently fell back apart after he left). Ditto for Seattle, who he took from the cellar to the Super Bowl (after being relieved of GM duties). His 49er offenses when he was OC are to this day some of the best Ive ever seen. He also turned Brett Favre and Matt Hasselbeck from nobodies, into a shoo-in HOF QB and a 3 time Probowler respectively, and was instrumental in Steve Youngs development in both college and the pros. As I said, he has a terrible track record as a front office guy, but let's not pretend like he was some chump coach with an unwarranted good reputation.
You nailed it. Mike is a really good coach. Still not sure I want him in Dallas, but he is a HOF coach IMO.
I'll give credit for a window of coaching success but toward the end, some of his decisions were more than suspect IMO.
