New York Mets players considered violating a Major League Baseball edict prohibiting them from wearing hats of various New York City first responders during Sunday night's game against the Chicago Cubs, but ultimately opted to adhere to the order from the commissioner's office, player rep Josh Thole said.MLB denied the Mets' request to wear the baseball caps despite the policy. Joe Torre, MLB's executive vice president for baseball operations, told The Associated Press in a phone interview the decision was made to keep policy consistent throughout baseball."Certainly it's not a lack of respect," Torre said. "We just felt all the major leagues are honoring the same way with the American flag on the uniform and the cap. This is a unanimity thing."

This is freaking ridiculous. The players should of just accepted the fine. It's not like they can't afford it. Even if there was a suspension it wouldn't matter because the Mets are 24.5 games out so the players wouldn't be missed.

Unanimity? Yea because every other city was just as affected as New York, so it should be an equal show of support. Thats bullcrap. New York should have been an exception to this rule. Classy move MLB, you look like buttholes.

No, the fact the MLB didn't allow it is freaking ridiculous. I'm just not happy that the players laid down and took it. NFL players were prepared to take their fines. I think they should of too.

He was the one that had to make the statement. I don't know if it was actually his decision.

big difference though, the yankees are the golden egg for mlb while the mets are on such thin ice. but yeah, ultimately the mets ownership snitched out here.

Fred Wilpon is a leach and a welp. In 2001 they were told not to wear the hats and they did anyway. In 2011 Fred told the players that they were NOT to wear the hats. And besides, the hats in 01 were given to the Mets by the actual first responders. Not some store bought NYPD hats. Baby asses.
