Mike Pereira, the NFL’s former head of officiating, writes that a new rule this year that calls for the replay official to automatically review every scoring play will lead to longer games. How many stoppages it creates in games remains to be seen, but more reviews will remain longer games, period. “If there is any question as to whether the ruling is correct, (the replay official) will buzz down to the referee and ask him to come to the monitor to review the play,â€￾ Pereira wrote on FoxSports.com. “A coach will not be allowed to challenge the ruling of a score. The intent is to save the coach from having to challenge the ruling of a score and, thus, increase his chances of not running out of challenges or timeouts. The replay official’s job just got a lot tougher, and the networks will be under more pressure to show replays in a timely manner. That won’t make anyone happy.â€￾ Per Pereira, the NFL’s 121 officials just completed a three-day clinic preparing them for the 2011 season. Now, they just need some games to happen to put the new rules in play.

This is almost as aggravating as the ENTIRE freaking lockout. Every scoring play reviewed? Guess I'm gonna need a few more soldiers to help me through the already 3.5 hour games.

I'm all for more football and no Big Ben fumble rule. But every scoring play is a bit much.

Paralysis by analysis... :icon_rolleyes:

Can't get the simple things done but waste a ton of effort complicating things not in need.

Bingo Tark. The freaking refs already have a huge crutch in the replay. Now they don't even have to make a definitive ruling on ANY scoring plays? Why even have the heckers on the field?

Cuz they don't want to risk a 'Save The Zebras" campaign from those an*l PETA zealots.

Oh nooooo, longer football games. I'm sure my wife would complain about this too.
Seriously there is a commercial after after every score anyway, unless there was something wrong there will be no delay.

Well here's the thing...this rule only covers "touchdowns.". Anything that is ruled a TD is reviewed. If a score is ruled NOT a TD and in actuality is a TD, that's not a reviewable play unless a coach uses a challenge. If it is outside of 2 minutes and a coach is out of challenges, they are crap out of luck. The rule doesn't cover the whole "envelope" of the endzone.

Even if it's a clear Touchdown. No question about it? I mean..seriously. This is stupid.

More sky is falling reactionism from GIf.....why do I still get surprised? This is hardly a big deal....if it adds even 10 minutes length to an avg. game I'd be surprised and what's so wrong about making sure all ruled TDs are indeed TDs.

^^ I understand on those questionable. But clear Touchdowns should NOT be reviewed.

And plays that are not ruled a TD should be reviewed as well. They shouldn't just half butt this. If they're going to review, review EVERYTHING.

Chipper10...They won't be. The way I'm reading it, only close plays will require the ref to go under the hood.

What about the TDs that are TDs that weren't ruled a TD?

Guess it will have to come down to a coach's challenge?

Outside of 2 minutes and a Coach out if challenges and they are hecked.

Pretty much. Does anything with these new rules the NFL is making..make any sense? Hell, has 95% of anything Goodell has done..make any sense?

No. They are trying to make the game perfect and it never will be perfect. Never. The basis of this rule is just plain incomplete. Nevermind the time.
