The idea of playoff expansion has been floated in the NFL on numerous occasions but it looks like it won't happen next year. Sources close to the situation have told Mark Maske of the Washington Post that the competition committee is not expected to recommend an expanded playoff field at the NFL owners meeting scheduled to be held March 17-20.

Playoff expansion would further fatten the pockets of owners but many feel it would water down the level of competition on the field. Think the NBA which seems to devalue the regular season because it seems like half of the league makes the playoffs. An expanded field would likely increase the number of participants in each conference from six to either seven or eight but would mean fewer preseason games.
