NFL Players Repeat Calls For Owners To Open Books

Since the NFL has released a ton of statements this past weekend – in effect, saying the players walked away from the negotiating table and that the decertification of the NFLPA was a sham – the players took a shot at fighting back at the owners this afternoon through the media. And, with Saints QB Drew Brees, Colts C Jeff Saturday and former union president Kevin Mawae on a national teleconference call, the tone the players presented was defiant – not to mention completely pissed off. Here’s what it boils down to for the players: the owners refuse to show them their audited financials. Therefore, they will not make a deal on giving back money, in particular the additional $1 billion slice off the top of the league’s revenues that the owners have requested. “We have access to those revenue numbers,†Brees said. “We don’t have access to the cost numbers. As we watch the NFL grow and grow and grow – it grew 7.5 percent last year in one of the worst economies in our history – for the owners to come to us and say, ‘Costs are going up faster than revenues,’ a very reasonable and logical businessman would say, ‘Let’s see those numbers and try to make it work.’ Then, that person says, ‘No, you’ll have to take our word for it.’ That doesn’t work. It’s impossible to negotiate a fair deal when you don’t have the numbers from the other side.†At this point, with an April 6 preliminary injunction hearing set in front of Judge Susan Nelson, don’t expect the players and the owners to negotiate any further.

As a business owner I would never open my books to my employees but I don't make billions...on the other hand they created their own lil monsters in the players.

You want $1B dollars off the top???? You better show someone your supposedly losing money numbers or I'm not giving you anything...Especially since it's obvious now that the owners weren't telling the truth about their finances anyway considering they have enough that 2011 with no football will not put them in the red in the least.

Agree with Omen. Players are insane to think they should get to have unfettered access to the books and if they are going to tank the season because of that insanity then heck them. I hope they enjoy watching scab ball.

They are employees. Their bosses are clearly crooked bastards but most boses are. It's kinda how the world works.

actually though they are losing money per se the original deal was 1 bil off the top which is 15%

4 years later profits are up 2.5 billion so that now 15% off the top is 12% so if they met in the middle of 500mil that would bring up to the original 15%

Employees but with a collectively bargained agreement. SO unless your employees are part of a Union or you've set up a CBA with them it's two totally different scenarios.

Not really. They are still employees. Just employees who THINK they can dictate everything which is the freaking problem.

Collectively bargaining for fairness and equity is one thing but that doesn't really apply to these greedy uneducated cocksuckers. (I have been using that word a lot lately I know but it sums up my feelings so damn well)

Although I think most of them are greedy bastards they as emolyees have no reason to see the books. Whether their boss makes 10 15 30 percent profit is non of their business. As long as they get paid what they have negotiated everything is good.....in construction we negotiate alot individually with workers depending on skill level. I take of them by paying them and giving bonuses here and there and they stay with me

The NFL is a partnership between the owners and NFLPA. Without the owners there is no NFL, with out the players there is no NFL.

I agree with you Omen...I wouldn't open my books up either. But, it's not the normal employer/employee relationship. If you work at McDonald's they aren't sharing 60% of the revenue. They are paying you whatever they want.

You can't really compare this situation to an everyday business.

If the owners want the extra billion, they'll have to open the books and show a loss in profitability. No way the players agree to giving it up without seeing it first.

There won't be replacement players. The NFL learned from the debacle in 1987. They don't want to go down that road again.

Because many of us realize that these players are making a ridiculous, insane, crazy amount of money for what they do. And it disgusts me when they get this chip on their shoulder like they have control of anything.

I got college football, I'm good...

If it goes on too long and the courts decline to see things the players way it COULD happen. As you pointed out it happened before. Of course a strike is different then a lockout and Keanu Reeves is getting a little long in the tooth.
