Five NFL players were fined $15,750 apiece for illegal hits that resulted in penalties during the first full week of preseason games. That included San Diego Chargers guard Johnnie Troutman, who was fined for an illegal peelback block — one of the rules the NFL expanded in the offseason as part of its player health and safety initiative. Detroit Lions linebacker Travis Lewis also was fined $15,750 for a horse collar tackle that left New York Jets running back John Griffin with a broken leg, ending his season. Chris Baker of the Washington Redskins, Nigel Nicholas of the Tennessee Titans and Jason Worilds of the Pittsburgh Steelers were fined $15,750 each for roughing the passer. At least nine other players were fined $7,875 each for various infractions: Ray-Ray Armstrong of the St. Louis Rams (face mask); Fred Davis (unsportsmanlike conduct) and Bacarri Rambo (late hit) of the Redskins; Antoine Winfield of the Seattle Seahawks (late hit); Jimmy Wilson (late hit) of the Miami Dolphins; Jalil Brown (late hit) of the Kansas City Chiefs; Brandian Ross (late hit) of the Oakland Raiders; Eric Frampton (late hit) of the Dallas Cowboys; and Shawn Loiseau (late hit) of the Indianapolis Colts.
