NFL To Come Down Hard On Plaxico Burress, Michael Vick?

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell is leaning toward indefinitely suspending former New York Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress and continuing to sideline quarterback Michael Vick, three sources with knowledge of the situations have indicated. Such moves would be the latest examples of Goodells tough stance on players embroiled in off-field issues as evidenced with the suspension of Cleveland Browns wide receiver Donte Stallworth earlier this month. Stallworth has been ruled out indefinitely by the league after pleading guilty to DUI manslaughter in the death of a Miami man in March.

the Burress suspension I am fine with. The Vick thing to me is overkill. He payed his debt Roger move on.

Yup, I agree 100% on Vick. Yeah, the dog fighting ring was wrong. Vick paid for it by going to jail and basically has to start from scratch with all the money he lost.

I disagree. He paid his time for the illegal actions he did. What about all the lieing he did to the NFL and the Falcons in regards to these crimes. If he would of been straight right off the bat I would say yes let him play, but since he lied over and over to the NFL and then failed drug tests while awaiting trial I would have no problem with a 4 game suspension.

Missing out on two years of pay and being cut by the team isn't punishment for the lieing?

Nope he missed the time due to legal issues, and was cut to save the team money for a player who isnt playing. I know most will disagree with me on this but hell this is what forums are for

No your fine Dave, keeps threads alive and makes them more fun.

Here is why I feel the way I do.

The lost time and the lost wages would of happened even before the new czar was in place. You get arrested you miss work and miss wages. That part is a no brainer.

As far as being cut, as a business owner you have to know when to cut your losses. By cutting Vick the amount of money lost by the Falcons was much less then it would of been not to cut him.

Therefore both of those would of happened even without the new conduct policies.

Now Vick had a chance to come clean to both Branch and Goodell about his involvement in this dog fighting ring, but chose to lie up until he was so deep in his lies there was no way out. Then on top of that he failed a drug test while though not playing, he was still employed by the NFL. The failed drug test warrants a suspension by itself, then add on the lieing. This is why I do not have a problem with a 4 game or less suspension. Now if it would go past 4 games I would say it is to much.

Good Points Bergy. I just think the man paid his debt to society why should he have to pay a seprate debt to his employer. That's like two punishments for the same crime It just feels like a double jepoardy situation to me.

Funny you bring up double jepoardy since wasnt he charged both federal and state in this case, lol. So ok lets just say he deserves a suspension for the positive drug test. If none of this ever happened and he popped for drugs would you feel he deserved a suspension?

I hope bergy is not on my jury... that man is harsh! :icon_wink:

Yes. But the man got his jail time. Shouldn't we at least give him a shot and see if he is reformed?

Haha SoDev. I just feel the punishment needs to fit the crime. Believe me I have made my mistakes in life, but one thing I will always be proud of is I "Manned up" admitted my guilt and did my time. No I have never been to jail or did anything as bad as this.

He committed a crime and instead of taking his punishment he went off and got high and continued to lie about his involvement until he knew he couldnt get away with lieing any longer. That shows a lack of character to me big time. Let Goodell show him that just because he served his debt to society does not mean he served it to the NFL. Maybe then Vick will keep his head straight.

It is a privilage to play in the top pro football league in the world, and these troubled players need to understand that.

I am all about letting him back in the league, thats why I think anything more then 4 games would be to much. But I do think he deserves some type of suspension, if not for anything else, for failing the drug test which he has not been punished by the league for

I hate when people say it's a privlage to play sports at the top level. A privalege is something given to you. Not one player in the league had it given to them they all earned the right to play in the NFL.

No they earned the right to play football. There is Canadian league, there is the UFL, there is European if its still around.

My point is they are playing in the elite league which is a privilage (how the heck you spell this word).

It's not a privilage. Because if all the top guys chose to play in the CFL then that would be the premier league the Players make the League the league doesn't make the players.

The league makes the players because if the CFL had the money to pay all the top players the amount the NFL does then most the players would play there. Anyways this is another topic for another thread.

You never did get back to me about whether Vick deserves a suspension for failed drug test

Too me no he doesn't. He was in jail I know he wasn't in jail for the drug use but still it's illegal and he did time. Give the guy a chance to prove he's changed. He did enough time I think he thought about all his transgressions and has suffered enough.

I am just going by the rules of the NFL. A failed drug test is punishable by a suspension up to 4 games for first offense. His missed time so far was not due to any punishment by the commish. Therefor I think he needs to pay the price for the drug use. To bad we are only ones debating this I thought we would get more opinions
