"A top Russian military official said Friday that Alexei Cherepanov, the Rangers prospect who died last month during a game in Russia, was playing for his Continental Hockey League team illegally at the time of his death. Vladimir Karpenko said on state television that the 19-year-old Cherepanov should have been serving his mandatory military service at the time of his death, not playing for the Siberian team Avangard Omsk.
