this is a subject that needs to be discussed/debated. not going to post an article here to start things. just want to get your thoughts.

what do you think is right or wrong with the current system ?

what do you think needs to happen to make things better ?

    who is to blame ?

should this be the #1 pirority of our governement ?

    what do you think ?

personally i think this should absolutely be our governement's #1 priority because a better educated public would need much less gov assistance. it's the "trickle down" theory that would actually work.

but to me the government wants us to be stupid because it makes the people more dependent and helps intrench these lifers that do nothing IMO to make things better for the common citizen.

Funny. I always thought this of my own government. And I'm from what you guys call a "third world country".

    Nothing to add...carry on...

I've always operated under the assumption that Mexico's education system focuses primarily on doctorates in fruit picking and border hopping.

I'm sorry to tell you you're wrong. But let's not derail this thread...

Then why is every Mexican I know in the United States a fruit picking border hopper? The only reasonable explanation as far as I can see is that they have received years of intensive education and training in their art. Just like the United States specializes in the training and deployment of child soldiers around the world to kill foreigners, only with Mexicans and fruit instead.

Either add something useful and thoughtful to the thread.

Our educational system is a former shell of itself. That grind children into little socialist followers.

The teachers union was first in creating this complacent current system we currently have. Common core is now further lowering the standards once again.

I guess I'll get this thread back on track:

    What is wrong:
Restricted competition, government intrusion/mandates, attempts at standardizing education, teacher unions (protects the tenured instead of having a system rewarding the best teachers)

    What is right:
    voucher program

    What needs to change:
Decentralize the process and school choice (attach educational dollars to the student).

    Who's to blame:
Anyone who thinks there is a one size fits all solution to education, teacher unions, federal government

Should education be the #1 priority of government:
    No.

    What do I think?

Lets put it this way if you don't trust the government to run healthcare why would you trust them to run education? Politicians like to have data or statistics as a sort of feedback to show what they're doing is working but that's also part of the problem. Students aren't data, you can't box education into a statistic. You end up with a bunch of standardized testing and the only thing the kids end up learning is how to pass those tests.

Education is an experience, everyone learns thins a bit differently. You can't inspire a kid to learn with some government program, only a parent or teacher can do that.

i only disagree on the #1 priority stance as i am talking about the public education system which agree or not is run by the government. i am not saying i want them setting up the programs (quite the opposite actually) but i am saying that system in place is faulty and must be fixed. the tax dollars going into education should be increased. legalize pot and take the tax revenue and put it right into education.

that all said the one point you made about the parents is one i think does not get talked about enough because if it is too many people who snitch and complain about the education system would have too much egg on their faces.

I don't know the politics of it, or whatever, but I can draw from personal experience.

I know when I graduated high school , I was not at all prepared for the real world. I don't think they teach you what you really need to know. You spend years learning things that they tell you you'll need, but we all know we never will. They never taught how to do taxes, how to really manage money, how to handle bills, how to look for a job. I feel like there should be more real world education as opposed to the book smarts stuff that looks good on paper but is never really used.

Also a story my sister told me a week or so ago. She has some friends still in high school. She said the school is forcing all the older "old school" teachers into retirement. They are going completely digital. Technology everything. All assignments, lessons, everything is on a computer or tablet. So one of my sister's friends asks a teacher a question about what they were working on. Teacher says, "I don't know Google it." Student says, "I shouldn't have to Google it, you're my teacher and I'm asking you for an explanation." Teacher says, "look I don't know. All the answers are on Google."

I don't know about you, but that just doesn't seem right to me.

So like I said, I'm clueless on the politics or bigger picture of all of this, but that's just what I could add.

Most students today are being taught how take test And not real life talents.

When I was in school our math teacher did teach us how to balance a check book, the ins and out about interest rates etc etc.

Our University system is also jacked, why on earth must college students. Learn English history and other non essential subjects that don't pertain to their majors/career field.

Education has been dumbed down. The more the Federal government gets involved the worse it gets. Not a coincidence.

It was hard as hell when most of us went, but most of our kids and grand kids seem to have it easy,at least where i live.

The stuff that is being taught is actually more advanced. I think the grading and discipline is much easier though. I know when I was in high school I never brought homework home, I never did the big projects, and I wrote all of my papers the day before they are due and I graduated with a 3.4 gpa. It was cool for high school, but I was not at all prepared for how I would have to work in college.

High school really doesn't teach you anything except how to graduate high school. They only care about hitting their testing numbers so they don't lose funding.

I remember not doing a damn thing for a class and still getting a C. I was nice to the teacher and participated in class and that was it. Main reason was because she was a disorganized mess, she would forget when essays were due and stuff like that. She was nice though.
