Panthers Formally Announce Coach John Fox, Staff Won't Return In 2011

  1. The Carolina Panthers said today that the contracts of head coach John Fox, coordinators Ron Meeks and Jeff Davidson and the rest of the coaching staff would not be renewed after this season. Fox has coached the Panthers the last nine seasons, compiling a 73-70 regular season record and a 78-73 record overall through last week’s game at Pittsburgh. "I told John today that I appreciate everything he has done for us over the last nine years, but as happens in this business, it is time for both sides to move in different directions,” said Owner/Founder Jerry Richardson in a statement. “While we haven’t accomplished all of the goals we set as an organization when we signed him in 2002, we have certainly had our share of high moments – the Super Bowl, two NFC Championship games, and a division title in 2008. We wish John and his family the best going forward.”

  2. Part of me wishes he never left the Giants......he was a damn good defensive coordinator.

I trully believe a lot of the problems with coaches is burn out. Getting canned, and taking some time off helps get your head together, or it's a heck that, I'm going to ESPN for a cushy job.

I wouldn't mind Fox being the birds Defensive Coordinator. I always really liked John Fox. I felt like he's the type of guy to just tell you to go heck yourself which would work in philly!

I also agree with Top Dawg about burnout. With the exception of a few, it's really hard to keep a super competitive team out there with the salary cap and inflation and just the league becoming more competitive. Big Red and the Sweatshirt are exceptions to the rule but in general, 4 or 5 good years is what you get and then I find it really hard to compete. Even Bellichick and Reid have had a few down years but they've rebounded nicely. I'm sure Fox will land somewhere eventually but you have to wonder where and in what capacity? How do you think he'd fair at the collegiate level?

John Fox deserves another shot, whether it's as a Defensive Coordinator or as a Head Coach. I think he would be good for Denver.

As what? HC? It's too soon for that. DC? He doesn't work a 3-4 which is what Denver is built for.
