Darin Gantt of the Rock Hill Herald reports a year ago, Carolina Panthers linebacker Thomas Davis fell victim to the rules of the uncapped year and was a restricted free agent instead of being able to cash in on an open market. Now, coming off two knee injuries, he again could find his access to a new contract limited by the minutiae of collective-bargaining agreement language, unless the Panthers make good on their oft-stated intention to take care of him. Davis spent last year on the reserve/physically unable to perform (PUP) list while recovering from his second torn ACL within seven months, the Panthers put him on PUP rather than injured reserve to allow him the opportunity to come back midseason if he recovered in time, even though the chances were considered slim. According to the last CBA, that decision could bind the linebacker to the Panthers for another year at well below what would have been his market value. Article XXXII, Section 2 of the previous CBA said any player who was not activated from PUP while in the last year of his contract would have that contract "toll" or carry over into the next season, that means Davis would be under contract for next season at the same $3.268million salary. Panthers need to cut their losses with this guy. He's good when he's healthy. The problem is that he's hardly ever healthy anymore. If the CBA gets fixed before the draft, they need to offload him for draft picks, and draft Von Miller at #1. I'm sure there will be a decent QB left in the 3rd round.
