After meeting with a doctor about his surgically repaired right ankle Tuesday, Panthers running back Jonathan Stewart will begin the season on the physically unable to perform list, according to a league source.

Stewart, who has been on the preseason PUP list, would not be eligible to come off until the sixth week of the season.

Stewart, who has not played or practiced since hurting the ankle last November during a game at Philadelphia, underwent surgery on both of his ankles during the offseason. But it's the right ankle that has given him the most trouble.

Stewart visited with Panthers team doctor Robert Anderson, a nationally known foot and ankle specialist, on Tuesday.
