Carolina Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith broke his left arm Sunday playing flag football and has already had surgery to insert a plate. Smith was reaching for a pass that went over his head and when he fell tried to catch himself with his left arm, breaking a bone near the same area where he broke the arm late last season against the New York Giants. Smith's agent, Derrick Fox, said that after consulting with team doctors Sunday, the decided to go ahead with surgery Sunday night. Smith's availability for training camp isn't done, altough the Panthers are done with football activities until their July 26 reporting date for training camp, he has time to heal. Smith should miss the start of training camp, the agent says, but should be available for the season opener on Sept. 12, at the New York Giants.

yep, this is why the doctors aren't going to let my boy play football this fall. he will just be getting out of his cast a few days before practice begins. The doctor isn't even sure he will be able to play winter basketball.

That blows, maybe Antrel or Kenny will break his arm again going over the middle but actually make the tackle.

No biggie.. Only will be a big deal if he continues to break his left arm (this is the 2nd time)

How old is your son? I know with kids they take a lot longer to heal and the docs are a lot more cautious about it, being growing bones and all.

I think Smith's NFL career is in it's death throes anyway at this point. You don't express a desire to NOT be the top guy on your team anymore if you really still have fire for the game. He might still have a couple more years in him, but I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't.

he's 10 and i'm not sure if it's in a similar spot as smith (my boy completely fractured the inside bone of his forearm closer to the wrist than the elbow) and they had to do surgery to re-set it and pin it.

i started asking the doctor about fall/winter sports. he said no sports for at least 3-4 months after the cast comes off and then he'll decide if it has healed enough. he said the bone can easily break again for quite a while (several months or even years).

I wonder if Smith is going to owe the Panthers any money if his contract says he shouldn't have been participating in outside sports like this after his first broken arm ........... ????

how about him trying to cover it up, says that he was telling the other players that they shouldn't say anything about the injury. He is trying to pass it off that he got hurt at his kids camp, but really hurt it playing flag football with friends. moron!

This is a HUGE blow for the Panthers. Not as if they were going to do anything with Douchenuts McDumbhair anyway, but this is gonna heck with Smith's head more than anything IMO. He has that sick stiff arm that he's always throwing. Is he going to be gunshy with that from now on? He just needs to switch to adimantium and call it a day.
