The New England Patriots reported to the league office that veteran offensive tackle Matt Light has been placed on the "Reserve/Retired" list, Howard Balzer of 101 ESPN in St. Louis reports. Though Light has been coy about his future plans, Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reported last week that Light was expected to retire this off-season. A second round pick out of Purdue in 2001, Light started 153 of 155 games over the last 11 seasons, earning three trips to the Pro Bowl and three Super Bowl rings in five Super Bowl appearances. Light is a member of the Patriots' 50th Anniversary and All-2000s teams. Signed to a two-year, $12 million contract from last August, Light started 15 regular season and three playoff games in 2011, Light had been scheduled to earn $5 million in 2012, which will come off the team's salary cap.

One of my favorite Patriots ever. I wish him the best of luck in whatever he decides to do next.

Under the allegations of Sandyvaginaitis and driving new members away, at this time I cannot comment on the situation.

he's retiring rather young for an o-lineman .......... will it prevent him from making the h.o.f. or is he a shoe-in with all those rings?

Not a chance in hell does he get into the Hall of Fame. Granted he was decent (1x All-Pro), but when you consider he played in an era where Jonathan Odgen, Orlando Pace, Walter Jones, Steve Hutchinson, Alan Faneca, Will Shields, Kevin Mawae etc. were at the top of their game, he doesn't have much of a case.

if my math is correct, though, Light has as many SB rings as all of those guys combined. the power of the ring, especially 3 in this case, seems to be the price of admission into Canton anymore. i'm not saying i agree with it. it's just reality.

it wouldn't surprise me at all if Light gets in and guys like Shields and Mawae don't make it without a ring.

of course, the whole h.o.f. process is pretty messed up anyway so it all depends on who is the 'presenter' for each player.

doesnt matter. he was a middle of the pack tackle and has some hardware....not all those patriots are going to be a HOFer because of their rings. Hes average, thats clear...he played on some great teams.

anyone who puts him in the same universe as roaf, odgen, pace, faneca, hutchinson has zero credibility. starks has 2 rings, still doesnt stop him from being painfully average

If Mark Tuinia isn't in the HOF, Matt Light definatly isn't an HOFer

the h.o.f. selection process isn't necessarily fair and just. we'll just have to see how it plays out.
