    Phils sign Howard through 2016

Ryan Howard will remain in a Philadelphia Phillies uniform through the 2016 season after agreeing to a five-year extension worth an average of $25 million per year.

The slugging first baseman has agreed to a $125 million extension that will kick in starting with the 2012 season. If Howard reaches incentive clauses and the team picks up its option for the 2017 season, Howard could earn as much as $138 million.

Don't get me wrong, I am glad we gave the guy a long term deal. I just think by the end of this one, we will be not liking it.

Ok, after a day of sleeping on it. I'd like this signing more if it was for 3 years. 5 is too long and I'm not totally convinced he'll be putting up the same #s near the end of his contract.

He won't be. A guy with his body type starts to fail 32-33, and that's 3 years in. I think it means 1 of two things,
    1) either we trade him in the third year if he is producing, or
    2) we won't be able to trade him at all at the end of the contract.

who is going to pick up his contract? the only team i can think of would be the yanks.

ok... too far into the future

He would have to be producing at a high level for the trade to even have a chance, which would mean that we would be pissed that we are getting rid of him. Or we keep him too long and he starts to really suck in which point we would be pissed that we still have him. seems like a really no win situation. The only way we win is if we keep him and he kicks butt the whole time and we trade him in the last year which seems like the least likely by far.

trading him later on to the AL is the only thing that would work here. amaro has cornered himself with this deal.

ruben is not doing a good enough job here. sure he signed ibanez & got lee last season, but ibanez is proving to be a bad move & he let lee go this year for a bullcrap reason. halladay was a great move, nobody can debate that but losing werth next year is going to hurt. who is going to protect howard and where are they going to get a right handed bat to replace his production.

The only place he'll be going down the road is into the DH role, howard that is. Werth is going to be missed...I. don't see them signing any big league guys since we don't have much available $ and think we r going to go with Gload till Brown is called up
