Recently I've read alot of things about Andy Dalton going in the late 1st early 2nd round. In fact, ESPN Analyst Trent Dilfer has even gone as far as to say, "I will not be wrong here. ... I'll be shocked if I'm wrong. Andy Dalton will be taken in the first round." Trent Dilfer: Andy Dalton is a first-rounder - Blog - MyNorthwest.com All this talk seems like too much. I have watched alot of games on Dalton and while I like him I could not justify taking him higher than the late 2nd and maybe possibly could be talked into taking him in the middle of round 2 if for a west coast team. I know need factors into where players get drafted but just thinking NFL teams will go needs based is ludicrous thinking. NFL teams usually try and draft where need/value combines. In most people's minds Dalton is behind: Auburn's Cam Newton, Missouri's Blaine Gabbert, Washington's Jake Locker, Florida State's Christian Ponder, Nevada's Colin Kaepernick, and Arkansas' Ryan Mallett. That is alot of QB's. Feel free to give all thoughts
I don't think it's any different than the unexplainable pre-draft rise of all the qb's every year. Nobody was talking about Newton or Gabbert as potential #1 overalls during the college season last year, and yet here we are. Nobody thought Dalton would be more than a mid-rounder, yet here we are. The media hype trains a hell of a vehicle, man. I like Dalton, I dont really think he's much behind the "top" tier guys, and if I'm a team confident in my ability to develop and bring along a qb without feeling rushed about it, then I'd pull the trigger on him in the second. I like him better than Kaepernick for sure, and even though Mallett looks SO good when he's good, I think he's going to be a headcase that cant get over himself so Id probably bump him behind Dalton as well.
yeah good points. I just feel with Dalton it was even more. Like you said most had him as a 4th, 5th, or 6th rd. pick during the year. Now after the year he is a 1st rounder? Now that's a BIG leap. Agreed I'd put him over Mallett. I need to watch Kaepernick I haven't seen enough of him.
There are a few things about Kaepernicks game that I can't stand personally. He's got that lonnnnnng slowwwwww windup and release like Leftwich (hate it), he comes from the gimmickiest of gimmicky offenses where 99% of the time it was one read and run (hate it), he's got a big arm but crap longball accuracy and zero touch, despite his lofty rushing numbers he doesn't really look that good running the ball, and hes built like a Sudanese basketball player. I think he's a habitual dog beater as well. Just kidding about the dog bit. Daltons got his share of questions too don't get me wrong, and I don't think either of these guys should be drafted by a team thats in a hurry for them to step in as starters, but I feel like Dalton has the better chance to become that eventual starter.
