The Oakland Raiders have extending their list of potential head-coaching candidates to Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator Dom Capers, according to a league source. Miami Dolphins interim coach Todd Bowles will interview for the Raiders' head-coaching vacancy on Friday, and numerous executives throughout the league expect new Raiders GM Reggie McKenzie to give strong consideration to longtime Packers assistant coach Winston Moss as well. McKenzie, who was introduced by the Raiders on Tuesday, said he has a short list of candidates, but the offensive or defensive background of a coach will not influence the choice, and head-coaching experience isn't a prerequisite. He will give his head coach authority to hire his own staff. Regardless, McKenzie is likely to be bringing more Packers personnel with him to Oakland. Source: NFL.com
Would be a head coach of a non-expansion team for the first time in his career............two other stops were the expansion Panthers and Texans.
Seeing who Al use to bring in these are upgrades. Bowles is just not ready IMO. Capers or Moss should get the nod. With Moss having the edge. He has experience under McCarthy as assistant HC. And worked with Capers as the linebackers coach. So he should have a good working on the Green Bay way of running a team.
i agree with teams giving coaches a 2nd chance but this would be capers 3rd chance ............ i think capers probably just belongs as an assistant/coordinator ................ this situation would be very similar to the norv turner or wade philips situations in my opinion........ coaches that are very good assistants/coordinators in this league so teams continue to look at them for head coaching positions even though they have repeatedly shown to be mediocre in that role. and this is related to the general lack of creativity and the good 'ol boy network of guys working with the same guys over and over because they are friends and they are comfortable with one another................. there is too much nepotism in this league and not enough creativity and risk-taking .............. guys just don't want to risk their 7-figure salaries by going out on a limb ............ and this is why we have the same teams winning the super bowl all the time and this is why we have some teams who can't sniff the super bowl ............. there are very few risk-takers in the league so we end up with organizations that pretty much look the same year after year ............ obviously, it works out well for the organizations on top
Seriously? The NFL is the most wide open professional league in the world, dynasty's are rare, team rotation in the playoffs are high and only four franchises have made more than one appearance in the Superbowl this millennium (01, 04, 05, 07 Pats, 06, 09 Colts, 05, 08, 10 Steelers and 01, 07 Giants).
Check that out, that means only TWO superbowls in the last 10 years have been played with two teams that hadn't been there since 2000....
you seriously don't think capers is a bad coach do you? the packers defense was downright dominant last year............ i don't think anyone knows what's wrong with them this year............ it may not be capers' fault. yep, SECOND chances makes sense .............. THIRD chances? not so much .............. i can't tell if your argument supports my point or counters it ........... the fact that the pats, steelers, colts, giants, eagles, ravens and packers always end up coming right back to dominance even if they slip a little while the Lions, Seahawks, Chiefs, Browns, Bengals, Jaguars, and Bills always slip back into sucking even if they rise for a little bit confirms my point. The fact is, the NFL is no better than MLB or the NBA, which are 2 leagues that people think do not have parity. Over the past 10 years, 6 different NBA franchises have won the championship. Over the past 10 years, 8 different MLB franchises have won the championship. Over the past 10 years, 7 different NFL franchises have won it all ............... once again ............ the structure of the nfl and the game itself SHOULD lend itself to more teams having a chance to win it all over a long period of time. However, a lack of creativity and risk-taking along with a lot of front office and coaching people just looking out for themselves and their friends makes this a fairly predictable league ............ just my 2 cents ...........
Seeing Capers had two expansion teams to start with I think giving the benefit of the doubt in this case is OK. But if he cant cut it I agree no more chances. But I don't think he gets the job anyway. Moss looks a lot better in this case. Plus you have to think about who really wants to go to the Raiders right now. They look like they are trying to get righted but its the Raiders. And they have been a mess for a long time now. But time will tell. Teams like the Pats, Steelers, Colts, Giants, Eagles, Ravens, Packers and the Saints have put together great systems in place to run their teams. Plus they are willing to spend some money to bring in people that are successful in their systems. The other teams you mentioned are smaller market type teams that just cant compete with bigger markets. With some of the owners just being cheap. Money is the biggest issue with most of what you have stated.
but how can there be a monetary disparity when the NFL has a salary floor and a salary cap so all the teams end up spending about the same amount of money?
