As it turns out, Zach Miller was never in the Oakland Raiders franchise tag plans. Despite heavy rumors to the contrary, the tight end was “not going to be franchised†according to Jerry McDonald of the Oakland Tribune. Instead, the Raiders plan all along was to tag Stanford Routt if they weren’t able to reach a new deal before the tag deadline. Once a three-year, $31.5 million was reached with the team’s new No. 1 cornerback, they were free to use it on linebacker Kamerion Wimbley. He too was not in the Raiders original plans, but the tag became a matter of convenience once his contract buyback was disallowed because of the NFL’s 30 percent rule. Source: Football News Now
