Le’Ron McClain is among the top fullbacks who will hit the free-agent market. There is only one problem: McClain doesn’t want to classified as a fullback anymore. McClain has been working vigorously this offseason to show teams that he is capable of being a ball-carrier again. So if he returns to the Ravens this year, it probably will have to come with assurances that he’ll touch the ball more than 49 times like last season. “I have no problem getting in there blocking and getting dirty because I love contact,†said McClain. “I just want to take my game to another level. No disrespect to anybody, not [offensive coordinator] Cam [Cameron], not John Harbaugh, not Ray Rice or Willis [McGahee]. I just don't want to disrespect my game anymore, like I feel like I've done these last two years." With the expected release of backup running back Willis McGahee (he’s scheduled to earn $6 million in 2011), the Ravens will need a power running back who can excel in the red zone like McGahee. "If that opportunity comes, I feel like I can step into that second running back role and still be that fullback," McClain said. “I had my game put in a box for the past two years because I couldn’t show too much. I want to get my chance. Hopefully it’s with the Ravens. If not, I’m prepared for the transformation.†Source: Baltimore Sun
I'd love for him to be back in the fold, taking Mcgahee carries and continuing at the FB position. He seems content with that so we should be able to get something done.
He was a pretty effective runner in college. I never understood why the Ravens took carries from his last season to give to McGahee. Dude can be a beast if they use him to run the ball as well as block.
Mainly because if Mcclain doesnt have a lead blocker in front of him he tends to tip toe, his big year came when Lo Neal was lead blocking for him. Hopefully we get another lead blocker in free agency or use Jason Mckie in that capacity.
