Read-Option A Possibility For Bears

The building blocks for the read-option are right out in the open for everyone to see in the first week of Bears training camp, Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune reports.

Bears coach Marc Trestman acknowledged the Bears are using elements of it in practice but said they have not had Cutler study the read-option yet. Trestman had parts of it in his offense in the CFL last season, specifically designed for Montreal Alouettes backup quarterback Adrian McPherson when he entered the game in short-yardage situations. But it was more a wrinkle of the offense than a staple of it. Most CFL teams have mobile quarterbacks so the option is in their playbooks.

"Jay has the skill set to do just about everything, anything," Trestman said. "We are trying to give him the things he has had the most success with first.

"Whether we'll do it, I don't know. We've studied it."

    No, no, & if I wasn't clear...NO!

Risking injury with your only QB isn't making me think of you as an offensive guru, Marc.

An option? Sure. A good one? Less so.

Jay has the athleticism for it, but I don't think it's a good idea to put him in position to get popped more than he already has. Wasn't the focus going forward to 'protect' him better?

    Exactly...

We finally get a semblance of an OL & the 1st thing Trestman explores is getting him out from behind it.

    WTF...

Sounds like it'll be a two or three plays a game kind of deal with the option but yeah keeping Cutler from getting knocked down every play should be a high priority.

I Would think after the success of the read option last year, more teams will work a handful of plays into the game plan every week. I doubt you see much in the preseason though.

Yea, it's a 'monkey see, monkey do' league but just cuz your QB has mobility shouldn't make you think you've got Griffin or Kaepernick.

Besides, this will be the 1st go-round with this OL & it galls me to think they'll force the issue with Cutler. Makes no sense for a few potential plays/yards...
