Ten-year veteran quarterback Rex Grossman will be on the Washington Redskins’ inactive list for the season-opener against the New Orleans Saints, the team announced Sunday morning. The other inactives are strong safety Brandon Meriweather, who is nursing sprained ligaments in his left knee, wide receiver Dezmon Briscoe, cornerback Crezdon Butler, rookie guards Josh LeRibeus and Adam Gettis and nose tackle Chris Baker. The most surprising move is sidelining Gossman, who started 13 games for the Redskins last season but lost his job when the team drafted Robert Griffin III second overall and named him starter after five rookie minicamp practice sessions. The Redskins also drafted Kirk Cousins in April, taking him in the fourth round. This preseason, he logged more playing time than any of Washington’s quarterbacks, recording 42 completions for 560 yards and three touchdowns and two interceptions on 73 attempts.
