As far as Victor Cruz is concerned, he’s “on schedule†to be ready to play in the Giants’ opener, next Sunday in Dallas but he’s not there yet and it’s not necessarily his call.

“In my head I am (playing in the opener),†Cruz told the Daily News on Friday. “But there’s still doctors and everybody has to look at me. But in my head I’m definitely playing.â€

The Giants seem optimistic that Cruz will play, though according to a source, they plan to be cautious next week during practice to protect his bruised left heel. The star receiver still has not been cleared to practice on Monday, although he’s hoping he will be after two more days of treatment this weekend.

At the moment, he said “everything feels good.†He also knows how important his presence would be in Week 1.

“I just want to play,†Cruz said. “But I understand how much my team needs me just to be out there as a catalyst to help us win, a player who knows the offense and is comfortable. I understand that I have to be out there for us to be at our maximum potential, to have our best chance to win.â€
