ESPN reported the NFL had made a settlement offer to Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma which would reduce his suspension to eight games on the condition that the linebacker drop his defamation lawsuit against NFL. NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said the league had no comment on the report. According to Steve Wyche of NFL Network, The NFL "has made no settlement offer" to New Orleans Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma regarding his season-long suspension for his role in a "bounty" program despite reports to the contrary, a source close to the situation told NFL.com and NFL Network reporter Steve Wyche on Monday morning. The source told Wyche that the lack of an offer does not mean a proposal might not be made in the future.

It has been talked about for there to be news about it. Which is going to make Goodell look like a bigger tool than we already know he is.

"Vilma entered into settlement discussions with the NFL in good faith," Vilma's attorney, Peter Ginsberg, said in the filing. "Vilma is well aware of, and has absolutely complied with, his obligations to safeguard the existence and substance of all such discussions, as have all of his representatives.

"Media reporting of settlement discussions, attributed to "NFL sources," coming the day after the harsh and unfortunate comments from Goodell, some of which are identified above, reflect a long-standing media campaign by Goodell and the NFL in this matter. Vilma respectfully requests the Court to make inquiry regarding the breach of the obligations to retain the confidentiality of settlement discussions."
